Congratulations to the leadership of our Services to Youth (STY) Facet Chair, Link Lauren Jennings, and the entire STY Facet Committee. On Tuesday, February 23rd, the STY Facet Committee hosted an HBCU event at Beyond Emancipation (BE).
The program was informative, interactive and included a panel discussion by recent and current HBCU Students. The session MC was Link Lauren and she started with an Ice Breaker that focused on Black History. Link Denise Smith welcomed our participants and Link Theresa Clincy provided a brief history of HBCUs. A lively panel discussion was facilitated by Link Nicole. The event concluded with Link Tracey sharing that participants who completed our survey would receive a $25 Visa gift card, that could be used to cover the $20 application fee, for the HBCU Common College Application.
Our panelists included:
- Jasmine Edwards a freshman at Spelman
- Deja Hill a freshman at Tuskegee
- Jayson Hadnot a junior at Grambling State
- Jamaica Greenwood a 2020 Graduate of Spelman
Our panelists were poised, prepared, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Their talking points included:
- What is campus life like? What has your experience been like living in a dorm?
- How did you prepare for moving from CA to another state?
- What do you wish you did differently?
- How did you know your school was the right school for you?
A special thank you to Link Nicole who was responsible for securing the student speakers and to Link Tracey for developing the exit survey. The participants from BE were engaged, asked questions, and enjoyed the interaction with our panelists. Thanks to Link Lauren and the STY Committee for “Leveling Up” in true OBAL Style!
